From the port to the city

Follow the authorised route from the cruise terminal to the waterfront and centre. Depending on the berth, allow around 20–40 minutes on foot; a taxi or available shuttle saves walking. Identify your return point: the yacht marina is not the cruise terminal. For Monte, use the cable car if operating that day or road transport; check official status before buying tickets.

One-day itinerary

Walking route: terminal → Avenida do Mar → Municipal Garden → cathedral → market → Rua de Santa Maria → São Tiago Fortress → waterfront → terminal. Allow 4–5 hours including lunch and breaks. If choosing Monte, shorten the town loop and allow roughly 2–3 additional hours for transport, queues and a garden; these are planning estimates, not a timetable.

Other options

Monte wicker sledges are a separate paid attraction and do not finish at the ship: onward transport is needed. Cabo Girão, levadas and the island’s east require a separate excursion; do not add them all to a town day.

Practical advice and return to the ship

The call on 2 March is 10:00–20:00. Madeira belongs to Portugal and is not part of the Canary Islands. Follow ship time; wet paving and steep streets call for suitable shoes. Return before all-aboard and avoid relying on a last-minute cable car or distant excursion.

Times and distances are estimates. Before travelling check opening days, tickets and current transport using the official sources below. The 2027 port schedule is not a guaranteed local transport timetable. The ship determines the all-aboard deadline, which takes priority over this suggested plan.
